Did I Watch the Image Awards or the Golden Globes?
I'm still on cloud 9 from seeing all the diversity at the Golden Globes. Last year I boycotted the Oscars but only watched the Golden Globes because of Ricky Gervais. I'm glad he calls out all these rich mo fos. But this year I had to sit through Jimmy Fallon. I had high hopes with Quest Love DJing but I was left underwhelmed. I did love the opening number but I'm one of the few of my posse to love La La Land.
With all the nominees we had this year I was shocked to see so many African Americans or of African descent nominated. This year is a big deal. This was not like a oh, here is your token nominee, this was legit.
Even though I don't watch Blackish religiously I giggle when I do and Tracee Ellis Ross is great in it, so I'm glad she won and used the platform to recognize we want to be heard.
I didn't see Picket Fences but seeing Viola Davis up there you couldn't help but be excited. Seeing her dark skin on such a bright yellow screamed I'm here you can't help but see me!
And seeing Donald Glover and Moonlight win major prizes I thought I was watching BET. PS More Mahersala Ali in 2017 please and thank you.
I wasn't just excited to see my people. I loved seeing my girl crush Priyanka Chopra and Sofia Vergara presenting. The fact that a musical and a French woman won major awards showed people want variety.
But then people kept calling Hidden Figures "Hidden Fences" and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who I normally LOVE) is wearing an afro pick in her hair and I realize we still have a long way to go.
In spite of that, kudos to the Golden Globes and having more diversity in storytelling and nominees, now that wasn't so bad was it?
